Holiday 2026: shoppers are asking AI what to buy. Get your store ready in six weeks

Adobe expects visits from AI assistants to U.S. retail sites to more than double this season, and those shoppers already spend more per visit than anyone else. The catch: an assistant only recommends what it can read and verify. Here is where AI shoppers come from, what each assistant looks at, and a week-by-week plan to have your products ready before Thanksgiving.

Picture a shopper on a Sunday night in late November. Instead of typing fly fishing gifts into a search box and opening ten tabs, she asks an AI assistant for a gift for her dad who fly fishes, under $75, that arrives before December 20. A few seconds later she has three suggestions, each with a price, a photo, a delivery estimate and a link. She clicks one. The other shops that sell perfectly good fly boxes never came up, and they will never know they were in the running.

That is the shift retailers face this holiday season. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are becoming a front door for gift shopping. They do not show a page of ten links; they pick a handful of products and explain why. This guide covers what the forecasts say, where those AI answers get their product information, and a six-week plan a small store can finish before Thanksgiving on November 26.

What the 2026 holiday forecasts say

Adobe forecasts that Americans will spend $275.1 billion online between November 1 and December 31, up 6.7% on last year. Cyber Monday, on November 30, is expected to pass $15 billion in a single day, and a record 63% of online spending is expected to happen on phones. 1

The number that matters most here is traffic from AI. Adobe counts a visit as AI traffic when a shopper clicks a link in a generative AI chat service or AI browser and lands on a retail site. It expects that traffic to rise 130% over last year, with the sharpest jump on Thanksgiving Day. 12

A 130% rise sounds smaller than last year's headline. Adobe reported that AI-referred traffic to retail sites grew 693.4% during the 2025 season, while noting the base was still modest. This year's growth starts from a much larger base, and that is the point: AI shopping has moved from a curiosity to a channel a store owner can see in their own analytics. 3

The quality of those visits has changed too. A year ago, Adobe found that visitors arriving from AI were worth less than visitors from other sources. By March 2026 they converted 42% better, and in Adobe's July data they converted 60% better and generated 53% more revenue per visit than shoppers arriving any other way. The likely reason is simple: by the time someone clicks from an AI answer, the assistant has already narrowed the choice, so they arrive closer to buying. 45

Salesforce sees the same shift, with a caveat

Salesforce's 2026 holiday predictions put AI agents behind roughly one in five visits to online stores this season. Read that figure carefully. Salesforce counts consumer assistants answering live questions, but also automated agents running background tasks and competitors' scrapers checking prices. Not every one of those visits is a person about to buy. 6

Salesforce also predicts that one in three ecommerce sites will have its own shopping assistant live by Cyber Week, and it reports that retailers running branded shopper agents in 2025 grew holiday sales 6.2%, against 3.9% for those without. That compares different retailers rather than proving the agent caused the growth, and a small store does not need its own chatbot to benefit. It needs the big assistants to understand its products. 6

Where AI shopping answers get their product information

An assistant does not walk your aisles. It builds its answer from structured product data that stores and platforms send it, from what it can read on your web pages, and from signals such as reviews and policies. Three sources matter most this season.

ChatGPT. In March 2026 OpenAI refocused shopping in ChatGPT on product discovery. Merchants share a product feed, a structured file of titles, descriptions, images, prices and availability, and shoppers finish the purchase on the merchant's own site. OpenAI says products from Shopify stores already reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no extra work; other merchants can apply through OpenAI's merchant page. OpenAI describes these product results as organic rather than paid placements. 78

Google AI Mode and Gemini. Google's shopping answers draw on its Shopping Graph, which is fed by Merchant Center, the free tool where stores submit their product feeds. In January Google added dozens of new Merchant Center attributes designed for conversational shopping and introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard that lets AI assistants complete checkout with a merchant. UCP checkout is still limited to select merchants, who remain the seller of record. Google's holiday update added AI performance insights in Merchant Center, so you can see how shoppers find your brand through AI. 91011

Your own website. Every assistant also reads web pages, and Adobe found that many retail sites are hard for machines to read. When it scored pages for how much of their content an AI system can actually extract, retail homepages averaged 75% and product pages only 66%. Details locked inside images, tabs that load only after a click, or prices drawn by scripts can be invisible to an assistant even when a shopper sees them clearly. 5

Why accurate data beats clever copy

Assistants are cautious about recommending what they cannot verify. If your feed has no price, the stock level is unknown or the delivery estimate is missing, a competitor with complete data is the safer answer. That is why the most valuable holiday work this year is unglamorous: correct titles, specific descriptions, current prices and stock, and clear shipping and return terms, in your feed and on your pages.

Accuracy also protects your margins after the sale. In Adobe's survey, 69% of shoppers said they were less likely to return something they bought with help from AI. That only holds when the product matches the description the assistant relied on, so precise sizes, materials and compatibility details pay off twice. 1

A six-week plan to be ready by Thanksgiving

Six weeks is enough if you work in order. Data comes first because everything else depends on it. Then pages, then holiday offers, then measurement, and finally a freeze so nothing breaks during the busiest week of the year. If you are reading this later, compress the weeks, but do not skip the first two.

Monolith's six-week sequence for the 2026 season, assuming Thanksgiving on November 26.

Week 1: see what AI says about you now

Before changing anything, find out where you stand. Write down ten questions your real customers ask, in their words: a gift for a new homeowner under $50, a waterproof jacket for Pacific Northwest winters, the best fly box for a beginner. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot. Record whether your store appears, which competitors do, and whether the details about your products are right. Wrong prices or discontinued products in an answer usually point straight back to a feed problem.

At the same time, take a baseline from your analytics. Visits from AI assistants usually show up as referrals from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Some arrive with no referrer at all, so treat the number as a floor rather than a full count.

Weeks 2 and 3: fix the feed, then the pages

Start with your twenty best sellers, not the whole catalog. In Merchant Center, clear every error and warning on those products, then work through the checklist above. If you sell on Shopify, review the sales channel settings in your admin to see which AI channels your catalog is shared with. If you sell on another platform, apply through OpenAI's merchant page so your feed can be considered for ChatGPT. 78

Then make the same products readable on your site. Put size, material, compatibility and care details in the page text, not only in images. Add Product structured data, a small block of code that labels price, availability and reviews for machines. Publish shipping and return policies as plain pages. And check your robots.txt file: OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so a rule written to stop AI training can quietly cost you holiday visibility. 12

For the content side of AI visibility, our guide covers how pages get quoted by ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Week 4: load holiday offers and deadlines

Assistants answer timing questions, so give them the facts. Add sale prices to your feed with start and end dates, so a Black Friday price does not linger into December. Publish your order-by dates for Christmas delivery. For reference, the U.S. Postal Service recommends shipping by December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express to arrive by December 25 in the contiguous United States. Check your own carriers' dates and allow a day for packing. 13

Gift guides are worth writing this year, but write them as answers. A page titled gifts for anglers under $75, with a sentence on why each item fits, matches the way people now ask. Keep the prices in the guide in step with the feed; a guide that disagrees with your product data gives an assistant a reason to trust neither.

Weeks 5 and 6: measure, then freeze

Set up one report you will actually read. In Google Analytics 4, a custom channel group can collect the AI assistant referral domains into a single AI channel, so you can compare its conversion rate and revenue per visit with search, email and social. Merchant Center's new AI performance insights show the Google side. Check both weekly through December. 9

In the final week before Thanksgiving, stop making structural changes to your site and feed. Keep inventory and price syncing running, and give one person a ten-minute daily check: are the top products in stock in the feed, are sale prices right, did any product get disapproved? During the season itself, the most expensive error is an assistant confidently recommending something you cannot ship.

Do you need your own AI shopping assistant?

Probably not this year. Salesforce expects a third of ecommerce sites to run one by Cyber Week, and a good on-site assistant can answer sizing and compatibility questions at 2 a.m. But an assistant on your site cannot help a shopper who never arrives, and the fastest-growing source of new visitors is the assistants outside your site. For a small store, the six weeks above are the better investment. Revisit an on-site assistant in January, with a season of real customer questions to build it on. 6

Start this week

  • Ask four AI assistants the ten questions your customers ask most, and write down what they say about you.
  • Take a baseline of visits and sales from AI referral domains in your analytics.
  • Open Merchant Center and clear every error and warning on your 20 best sellers.
  • Check your Shopify sales channels, or apply on OpenAI's merchant page if you use another platform.
  • Confirm robots.txt is not blocking OAI-SearchBot or other search crawlers you want.
  • Put your holiday order-by dates on your site and in your shipping settings.
The short version

Monolith's take: AI assistants will send more holiday shoppers than ever this year, and they favor stores whose product data is complete, current and readable. A small store does not need its own chatbot to win those visits. It needs an accurate feed, plain-text product pages and a daily check through Cyber Monday.

Questions, answered
How do I get my products into ChatGPT shopping results?
Shopify stores reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply on OpenAI's merchant page to share a product feed. OpenAI says shopping results are organic, so accurate titles, prices, stock and shipping data matter most.
Does Google AI Mode use Merchant Center data?
Yes. Google's shopping answers draw on its Shopping Graph, which is fed by Merchant Center product feeds, along with what Google can read on your pages. Complete attributes, current prices and shipping details help.
How much AI shopping traffic should I expect this holiday season?
Adobe forecasts that AI-referred visits to U.S. retail sites will rise 130% over the 2025 season, with the steepest jump on Thanksgiving. How much reaches your store depends on how complete and readable your product data is.
