Krea 3: image edits in under 8 seconds, and what they really cost

Krea's new editing model is built for the other side of the speed and price trade: most edits come back in under 8 seconds at native 2K, for a few cents each. Here is what it keeps intact, what an edit actually costs once you add your own photos, and where it fits in real creative work.

By Monolith

Picture an outdoor gear shop with 400 products and one photographer. Every product has a clean packshot on white, but the website, the ads and the holiday email all want lifestyle images: the jacket on a trail, the mug on a cabin table, the same tent in three colors. Image editing models can do that now. The problem has been time and money. The best-known ones take from half a minute to a minute and a half per edit and list at 13.5 to 22 cents per image, which adds up quickly across a catalog. 1

Krea released Krea 3 on October 15, 2026, and built it for exactly that job. Krea says most edits come back in under 8 seconds, end to end, at native 2K, for $0.06 per image, and that the model leaves alone what you did not ask it to change: the label on a product, the face of a person, the rest of an approved image. It is live on krea.ai, which Krea says has 30 million users, and through six partner platforms including fal, OpenRouter and Replicate. 1

Krea made a one-minute launch film for the release and offers it free for coverage in its press kit. It plays below in our player; nothing downloads until you press play. 4

How fast is Krea 3, and compared with what?

Krea compared Krea 3 with Google's Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 and OpenAI's GPT Image 2. It used the median time from request to finished image for edit jobs run on Krea between September 24 and October 1, 2026, with time spent waiting in the queue included. On that measure Nano Banana 2 took 27 seconds, Nano Banana Pro 33 seconds and GPT Image 2 90 seconds, against under 8 seconds for Krea 3 at 2K. 1

Two cautions apply. These are Krea's own measurements on Krea's own platform, and queue time depends on how busy each service was that week. Krea's pages also disagree on the details: the speed chart on the Krea 3 page lists different timings for the same rivals, such as 29 seconds for Nano Banana Pro and 118 seconds for GPT Image 2, without saying how they were measured. Every version points the same way, and by a wide margin, but the exact multiple is not a number to promise a client. 12

Speed matters more than it sounds. At under 8 seconds you can try an idea, look at it and try the next one without losing your train of thought; Krea's point is that while a slower model finishes one image, you have already looked at four or five. It also changes batch work. Run one after another, 400 edits at 8 seconds each finish in under an hour; at 33 seconds each they take more than three and a half hours. 1

What an edit costs once you add your own photos

Krea lists Krea 3 at $0.06 per image at 2K and $0.03 at 1K. It says the launch price is the list price, not a subsidy, and that it expects prices to go down rather than up. At 100,000 edits a month, Krea puts the bill at $6,000, against $13,500 for Nano Banana Pro and $22,000 for GPT Image 2 at their list prices. 12

There is a catch in the fine print, and it applies to every model on that chart: the prices are per image without image references. An edit always starts from at least one picture, your photo, and Krea's API documentation charges for references separately. Each reference adds $0.02 when it is a 1K image or $0.07 at 2K, and the slower, more careful high thinking mode adds $0.02 per generation. 13

EditPriceHow it adds up
Quick draft$0.051K output, one 1K photo: $0.03 + $0.02
Everyday edit$0.082K output, one 1K photo: $0.06 + $0.02
Detail edit$0.132K output, one 2K photo: $0.06 + $0.07
New scene$0.142K output, three 1K photos, high mode: $0.06 + 3 × $0.02 + $0.02
Monolith's arithmetic from the price components in Krea's Krea 3 API documentation, read October 18, 2026: a base of $0.03 at 1K or $0.06 at 2K, plus $0.02 for each 1K reference image, $0.07 for each 2K reference image and $0.02 for high thinking mode. Partner platforms set their own prices. 3

So the realistic floor for a 2K edit of one photo is 8 cents, not 6, and a scene built from a room photo and two product shots in high thinking mode is 14 cents. That is still below the rivals' list prices before their own reference charges. It also makes the size of your input a cost decision. Krea says a reference of about 1 megapixel is enough for most edits, and that it is worth sending the highest resolution you have only when small text, logos, fabric or faces in a wide shot matter. 3

It changes one thing and leaves the rest

Krea's second claim is precision: ask Krea 3 to change one thing and it changes one thing. Its launch post shows a living room where the sofa, chairs and table were swapped for products from three reference photos while the rug, the view and a woman reading in the corner stayed put. For brand work that is the whole point. When a client approves a product shot and asks for a new background, they need the same product back, label and all. 1

Krea 3 edits in two ways. A regional edit, switched on with one setting in the API, redraws only the part of the image that needs to change and leaves everything else exactly as it was, so you can keep editing the latest version without losing quality. In the Krea app, you draw a box and say what changes. A regular edit re-renders the whole picture, which is what you want for relighting, restyling, changing the season or combining several images, but Krea warns that small artifacts can build up if you keep editing the output of the last edit. 23

Regional and regular edits side by side across three chained edits. An illustration by Monolith of the behavior Krea's API documentation describes, not a Krea 3 output. 3

Krea backs the precision claim with one test on its Krea 3 page. Asked to change only a woman's coat to cobalt blue, Krea 3 in its Precise mode left every pixel outside the edit area unchanged, against 98.54% for OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 and 96.22% for Nano Banana Pro. That was one attempt per model on one image, compared at quarter resolution, so read it as a demonstration rather than a benchmark. 2

Two more controls help with brand work. You can name an exact hex color, such as #FFC12E, and Krea says the model matches it on the product and only on the product. And in the API, a negative prompt of up to 1,024 characters lists what to avoid. Krea describes the model as best at product scene changes, object removal and photo cleanup. 23

References, characters and the six-or-eight question

Krea 3 combines several images into one. You refer to each by number, image 1 the room and image 2 the sofa, and it places people, products, places and styles in a single picture. Krea says it keeps characters consistent across a series, so a campaign can keep the same model from the first shot to the last, and style references can hold a look steady across a set. 12

How many references you can use depends on which Krea page you read. The launch post says up to 6 per edit; the Krea 3 page and the API documentation say up to 8. The API also sets a practical limit on detail: each reference is used at its uploaded size up to 4 megapixels, but with five or more in one request, each is shrunk to 1,536 pixels on its longest side. For full-detail references, Krea recommends sending four or fewer. 123

It also works from drawings. Krea's examples turn a line drawing and a six-color palette into a finished architectural photograph with each color where the brief put it, and a technical drawing of a drinks can into photorealistic renders. For architects, interior designers and product designers, that is a fast way to show a client a room or an object before it is built, with the caveat that a render is a picture, not a specification. 1

How to write a Krea 3 prompt

Most of the prompts behind Krea's examples follow one pattern, and it is a useful habit for any editing model: 1

  • Start with what stays: "Keep the product exactly as it is," and name what matters, such as the label or the logo.
  • Describe the change the way a photographer would: the scene, the light, the camera.
  • With several images, say what each one is for: "image 1 is the room, image 2 is the sofa."
  • Use "only" when the edit should touch one thing: "Remove only the woman in the red coat."

Krea's API documentation puts the emphasis slightly differently: lead with the change, then close with one sentence about what should stay the same, rather than listing everything. The two agree on what matters. Be specific about the change, be explicit about what must not move, and name each reference by what it shows. 13

Krea quotes Pixelcut, a photo editing company that tested early versions of Krea 3 with its own users. Its chief executive said the lighting stood out, and that most Pixelcut customers are small businesses selling online that cannot pay for a studio shoot for every product. That is the clearest fit we see too: a shop with good packshots and no budget for lifestyle photography of every item. 1

What Krea has not shown yet

There is no independent benchmark for Krea 3 yet; every speed, price and precision figure in this article comes from Krea. The launch film says up to 4K, while the API documentation lists 1K and 2K outputs and rounds custom sizes to those canvases, so plan on 2K. Krea also says Krea 3 is not real time yet. Its fastest setup finishes an edit in about 4 to 5 seconds, and it is working on instructions you circle or write on the image instead of typing. 134

The sensible test is your own work. Take 20 products you have already photographed, write one scene prompt, and run them through Krea 3 and the tool you use now. Count how many edits are usable on the first try, how many need a second pass, and what each usable image cost with references included. That figure, not the launch chart, tells you whether it is cheaper for you. For larger teams, Krea offers to run one workload beside your current tool and report the acceptance rate and cost. 2

The short version

Monolith's take: Krea 3 makes good image editing fast and cheap enough to run on a whole catalog instead of a few hero shots. Budget about 8 cents an edit rather than 6 once your own photos are counted, use regional edits on anything a client has already approved, and test it on 20 real products before you change your workflow.

Questions, answered
What is Krea 3?
