Canva Craft: Canva's own AI image generator, and how it compares
Canva has released its first image model built in-house, trained on millions of Canva templates rather than mostly photographs. It plans the layout before it draws, renders legible text and hands you images you can split into editable layers. Here is how it works, where it ranks, what it costs and when it is the right tool.

Picture a cafe owner who needs a seasonal menu board, a story for Instagram and a printed poster for the window, all by Friday. Most AI image tools can make a pretty picture. Fewer can put the words in the right place, spell them correctly and give you something you can still edit when the price of the pumpkin latte changes. That is the job Canva built its new model for.
Canva unveiled Canva Craft on October 22, 2026, its first image generation model developed and trained by Canva Research, its in-house AI lab. Craft generates images at 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios, and Canva says it is available to all Canva users globally from the Dream Lab panel, and to developers through Canva's public API. 1
How Craft makes an image
Most image models go straight from your prompt to pixels. Craft splits the work in two. A planning model first reads your prompt and writes a detailed plan of the composition: which elements appear, where they sit, how big they are relative to each other, what is most important and any text that needs to appear. A separate rendering model then turns that plan into the final image. 1

- Split into layersMagic Layers turns the image into editable design elements, helped by Craft's built-in element boxes. What it settlesText and objects you can edit in Canva
That split is why Craft is good at the things that matter for marketing graphics: legible text, precise placement and consistent relationships between elements. Because the model already knows where each element is, Canva says images convert into editable layers with Magic Layers more accurately and faster, using what it calls JSON boundary boxes. In plain terms, the poster comes out as a design you can change, not a flat picture you have to regenerate. 1
Trained on designs, not just photos
Canva says that while most image models learn mainly from photographs, Craft's training puts much more weight on design. Its training data includes millions of human-made templates from Canva's library: posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and typography-heavy layouts. Canva then tuned it with feedback from its professional designers, who worked with researchers to judge more than 25,000 pairs of images against leading models. When the automated scores and the designers disagreed, Canva says it sided with the designers. 1

How it ranks against other image models
Canva points to DesignArena, a crowdsourced site where people vote between images from different models without knowing which is which. Craft debuted as the fourth-ranked image model there, and Canva says that makes Canva Research the second-highest lab for image generation, behind only OpenAI, whose models hold the top three places. On the overall leaderboard it sits ahead of Google's Nano Banana 2.1 and Black Forest Labs' FLUX 3 Image. 12
Canva also highlights category results from launch: first of 87 models for people and portraits, first of 85 for landscapes and nature, second for abstract and patterns, and fourth for products. Those are Canva's figures from DesignArena's subcategory boards. Crowd votes reward images that look good at a glance, which is useful but not the same as being right for your brief, so test on your own prompts. 1
What it costs to use
Craft is available to all Canva users, but how much you can use it depends on your plan. Canva meters its AI tools through a shared monthly allowance, and creating an image with Canva AI is one of its Premium AI tools, which draw more of that allowance than basic tools. Canva says more complex prompts use more of the allowance, so real usage tends toward the low end of these ranges. 13
| Plan | Premium AI allowance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canva Free | Up to 20 uses | Shared with Standard AI tools; no Ultra AI tools |
| Canva Pro and Teams | Up to 200 uses | Or up to 20 Ultra AI uses; Standard AI tools do not count |
| Canva Business | Up to 400 uses | Or up to 40 uses of Ultra AI tools instead |
| Canva Enterprise | Up to 400 uses | Each member has their own allowance |
Developers can build Craft into their own products through Canva's public API, and Canva says the Canva MCP server, which lets AI assistants call Canva directly, is coming soon. That would let an assistant make a launch graphic or a social post as one step in a bigger task. Canva also says two faster, cheaper variants, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, are on the way. 1
When to use Craft, and when to use something else
We have covered most of the leading image models this fall. They are not interchangeable, and the right one depends on the job. Here is how we would choose.
| If you need... | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Posters, menus and social posts with text | Canva Craft | Plans layout and text first; converts to editable layers |
| The highest crowd-rated image quality | GPT Image 2.5 | Holds the top places on DesignArena |
| Exact placement from coordinates | FLUX 3 Image | Takes bounding boxes for each element |
| Fast edits to an existing photo | Krea 3 | Built for quick, targeted image editing |
| Images inside Google's tools | Nano Banana 2.1 | Powers on-brand visuals in Gemini |
For a small business that already designs in Canva, Craft has one big advantage over the others: the result stays in Canva as layers your team can edit, resize and reuse in templates. Canva itself says the first version still has room to improve on fine print and technical drawings, so check small text and anything with exact measurements before it goes to print. 1
Need exact element placement? Our FLUX 3 guide explains bounding-box prompts and when they beat a plain description.
A five-minute test before you rely on it
- Recreate one real asset you made recently, such as last month's promo post, from a short description.
- Ask for the same design in three sizes: square post, story and printed poster.
- Check every word in the image, especially prices, dates and your business name.
- Run Magic Layers and confirm you can edit the text and move the main elements.
- Compare the time against how long the original took, and keep a person approving anything published.
Monolith's take: Canva Craft is the most practical image model yet for everyday marketing graphics, because it plans the layout, gets text right more often and hands back editable layers. It is not the top-rated model for pure image quality, and fine print still needs checking. If your team already lives in Canva, make it your first stop for posters and social posts.
