Claude Duet: Anthropic's proactive AI agent for small business owners, explained

Anthropic's new Claude Duet app does not wait for you to ask. It sends a morning brief, keeps working in the cloud while you are away and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. Here is what it actually does, who can get it, what it costs, how its safeguards work and what it cannot do yet.

Picture the owner of a small interior design studio on her walk to work. By the time she reaches the office she wants to know three things: which client is waiting on her, which invoice is overdue and whether anything on today's calendar is about to go wrong. Most AI assistants can answer those questions if she remembers to ask. Claude Duet is built to tell her first.

Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. It is a separate app in which Claude works as a proactive agent: it comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you hand it, keeps working when you step away and checks with you before it acts on your behalf. Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track. Access starts by waitlist with US Pro and Max subscribers. 1

What Claude Duet does

Duet runs on your existing Claude account, so the memory, skills and connected apps you already set up are there from the first message. You talk to it in one ongoing thread, by text or voice. Each morning it sends a short brief on the most important items across your email, calendar and connected apps, and can start the first steps, such as drafting replies for you to review. 12

Bigger jobs run in the background. Duet has its own computer and browser in the cloud, so it keeps working after you close the app or switch off your laptop. You describe the task, it works out which apps to use and how much effort the job needs, and it notifies you when the work is done or needs your review. Finished files, such as a research brief, a financial model, a slide deck or a dashboard, land in a Make tab, and a Tasks tab shows what is in progress. 12

What it can do in a small business

Duet can use the more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in Anthropic's Claude Marketplace. Anthropic's own examples read like an owner's to-do list. 1

It can also buy things for the business. Purchases go through Link, Stripe's digital wallet, or Shopify's Shop Pay: Duet confirms the item with you, you approve the spend, and it pays with a one-time card limited to that merchant and amount, so your real card number is not shared. Anthropic says sign-in with logins saved in 1Password is coming. 13

Anthropic shared what early small business testers reported. A real estate broker said Duet flagged a property showing booked on the wrong day without being asked. A restaurant owner with about 110 employees has used it for accounting, customer support and marketing, working through invoices store by store. A brand strategist had it prepare a brief for a client call and offer to move the call when it noticed it fell right before her flight. These are selected examples from Anthropic, not averages. 1

What it will and will not do without you

The design question with any agent that acts on your behalf is where it stops and asks. Duet reads, drafts and prepares work on its own. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you the action, the destination and the content, including every recipient, and waits. A separate automated check, built on the classifier Anthropic uses in Claude Code's auto mode, runs alongside each action to judge whether it matches what you asked. 13

Never, even if you approveTrading securities, moving money between accounts, accessing someone else's accountRefuses
Duet's approval rules as described in Anthropic's safety article and help center. 23

Duet also screens what it sends. A dedicated classifier checks each outgoing message for sensitive information in two tiers. The strictest tier, which includes sign-in credentials, full card and bank account numbers and government ID numbers, is never shared, even if you ask. Other private information, such as health or finances, is shared only when you have explicitly approved it, and your own request counts as approval. 3

Passwords stay out of the model entirely. When a site needs one, you type it into a form in the app that encrypts it for a single use and hands it straight to the cloud browser; Duet never sees it and cannot save it. Anthropic says Duet's browser identifies itself to websites as an agent, and that an external firm penetration-tested the product before launch. 3

Who can get it and what it costs

During the research preview, Duet is available only to US users on Claude's Pro and Max plans, through a waitlist that opens in waves. It is not yet available on Team or Enterprise plans. It costs nothing extra, but it uses your plan's usage limits, and its background work, such as the morning brief and check-ins, counts too, so you may reach your limits sooner than with chat alone. Anthropic gives each admitted user one full limit reset, available until November 30, 2026. 2

What it cannot do yet

Anthropic is candid that this is an early version that might misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent. The help center lists the current limits, and a few matter for planning. 12

  • It checks your accounts at set intervals, not constantly, so something urgent can arrive between checks.
  • It does not make phone calls or send texts to other people; with approval it can send email from connected accounts.
  • You cannot choose the model, watch it work in its browser or take over the browser.
  • It cannot see files on your computer, and it can read but not change your work in Claude.
  • Some connectors, such as Slack, work with limits, and Microsoft 365 is not available yet.
  • It lives in its own app for now, separate from the main Claude app.

How to trial it without risk

If you get access, start narrow. Connect your calendar and one inbox, let it run the morning brief for a week, and judge whether it surfaces things you would otherwise have missed. Then add one money app, such as Stripe or QuickBooks, and use it only to draft reminders you approve. Leave payroll, contracts and purchases until you trust its judgment on the low-stakes work.

Two habits keep it safe. Read every approval request in full, including recipients and amounts, rather than tapping through; Anthropic itself warns that too many approvals train people to stop reading. And remember that disconnecting an app stops new access, but what Duet already learned stays in its memory until you reset it. 3

The short version

Monolith's take: Claude Duet is the most carefully designed personal agent so far for small business owners, with clear approval rules, a sensitive-information screen and credentials kept away from the model. It is US-only, waitlisted and still learning what counts as urgent. If you are on Pro or Max, join the waitlist, start with your calendar and inbox, and add money apps only once it earns trust.
