Should your business advertise in ChatGPT? What to know as ads reach 89 countries

OpenAI opened ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries today and says over 100,000 advertisers have used them. Here is what the ads look like, how they are matched and billed, the AI rewrite setting that switches on October 29, and how to run a test without wasting budget.

Picture a shopper in a small apartment asking ChatGPT for a dining table that seats four, fits a narrow corner and costs under $800. She asks follow-up questions about finishes and delivery, and narrows it down over a few minutes. For a local furniture store, that conversation is the moment that matters: she knows roughly what she wants and has not chosen where to buy it. Until this year there was no way to pay to be part of it.

There is now. On October 21, 2026, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, bringing them to 89 worldwide. OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched just over eight months ago, and that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week. Businesses can buy through technology partners or set up campaigns themselves in Ads Manager. 1

How fast ChatGPT Ads have spread

Ads run only on ChatGPT's free and low-cost Go plans. Since launch, OpenAI has added countries in large batches and, in September, a set of AI tools for building and running campaigns. The next step it names is more ad formats, campaign objectives, buying options and measurement. 12

What a ChatGPT ad looks like, and who sees it

Ads appear below ChatGPT's answer, clearly labeled and separate from it. Each one has the same six parts: 3

  • Your business name
  • Your favicon, the small logo from your website
  • A headline
  • A short description
  • An image
  • The landing page the ad links to

Only people on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans see ads. OpenAI does not show them to Plus, Pro or Business subscribers, or to accounts it identifies as belonging to someone under 18. That shapes the audience: you reach the large free user base, not the paying professionals who use ChatGPT for work. 13

How ads are matched to conversations

This is the biggest difference from search ads. There are no keywords to bid on. OpenAI's system picks ads based on the context and intent of the current conversation, your landing page, headline and description, and, for people who allow personalization, some signals from their wider ChatGPT use. 3

What you can add are context hints: short descriptions, at the ad group level, of the conversations, topics or keywords where your product fits. OpenAI is explicit that these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee your ad appears in any particular conversation. In practice, your landing page does much of the targeting work, so a vague page means vague matching. 3

OpenAI says ads only run next to chats that are safe and appropriate for brands, and keeps them away from sensitive contexts set out in its ads policies. Qualifying advertisers can also add negative phrases to keep their ads out of conversations they want to avoid, though OpenAI notes not every advertiser has that option. 3

What it costs and how you pay

You choose one of three goals and set a maximum bid for each ad group. Ads compete in what OpenAI calls a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so a more relevant ad can win without the highest bid, and in a second-price auction the winner generally pays just enough to beat the next ad rather than its full maximum. 3

GoalWhat it optimizes forWhat you pay forYour bid
ViewsBeing seenImpressionsMaximum cost per thousand impressions (CPM)
ClicksTraffic to your siteValid clicksMaximum cost per click (CPC)
ConversionsA supported conversion event, such as a purchaseValid clicks, not conversionsMaximum cost per click (oCPC)

OpenAI suggests starting click campaigns at a maximum of $3 to $5 per click, and Ads Manager shows a bid-strength indicator when a bid looks too low to win. That gives a simple way to size a first test. 3

A hundred or so clicks is enough to see whether people arrive and engage, but not always enough to judge sales for a product with a long buying cycle. Plan the test around the result you can actually measure in a month.

The October 29 change: AI rewrites, switched on by default

This is the setting to look at this week. When OpenAI announced AI text customization in September, it was something advertisers chose to turn on. Its help center now says creative enhancements, which include rewritten headlines and descriptions, will be enabled automatically for new and existing campaigns starting October 29, 2026. 24

Creative enhancements adapt your ad to the conversation using your existing ad and your landing page. The variations can be prepared in advance or created in real time, and they run without you reviewing or approving each one. There is no preview of every version. 4

For many businesses this will help: one ad can speak to many slightly different conversations without you writing every version. But if you sell anything where exact wording matters, such as financial, health, legal or regulated products, or you have strict promotion terms, decide deliberately. You can opt out before October 29 or change the setting at any time in Ads Manager. Existing account and campaign opt-outs stay in place, and a campaign setting overrides the account default. 4

Either way, OpenAI's advice is the same: keep your ads and landing pages current, including prices, promotions and availability, because those pages are what the AI writes from. A stale landing page becomes a stale ad you never saw. 4

AI tools for building campaigns

In September, OpenAI added several tools that lower the effort of running ads, which matters most for small teams. 2

  • Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT: create, update and analyze campaigns with plain-language prompts, including turning a website or brief into a campaign.
  • AI suggestions in Ads Manager: draft copy and imagery based on your landing page and campaign goal, which you review and edit before using.
  • Shopify app: US-based Shopify merchants can create and manage campaigns from the Shopify App Store, with products already pulled in through Shopify Catalog.
  • HubSpot integration: create ads, track performance and follow up on leads inside HubSpot.
  • Sponsored Agents: after clicking an ad, a person can chat with a business-sponsored agent about the product. Currently tested with select US advertisers.

What OpenAI promises users, and why it matters to you

OpenAI says it keeps conversations private from advertisers, does not sell user data, keeps ads separate from answers and does not let advertising influence what ChatGPT says. For an advertiser, that last promise cuts both ways: you can buy a placement below the answer, but you cannot buy your way into the answer itself. 1

Being recommended in ChatGPT's actual reply still depends on what it can find and trust about your business, which is a separate job from advertising. If that matters more to you than paid placement, our guide to AI search visibility covers it.

What we do not know yet

ChatGPT Ads is still a beta product, and some of the things you would expect from a mature ad platform are not public. 3

  • No published benchmarks. OpenAI has not released average click-through rates, click prices or conversion rates, so nobody can tell you what good looks like yet.
  • Reporting is basic. Ads Manager shows impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC and CPM, and conversions if you set up conversion tracking.
  • Spend lags. Spend can take 7 to 8 hours to appear, so a $0 figure does not mean nothing has been charged.
  • Review crawlers visit your landing pages. Analytics tools may count them as paid traffic, though OpenAI says those visits are not billed.
  • Formats will change. OpenAI says new formats, objectives, buying options and measurement are coming.

A 30-day test plan

Treat the first month as learning, not scaling. Each stage below has a check that should pass before you move on.

If the numbers are close, keep it running at a modest level while the platform matures. Early channels tend to get more expensive as more advertisers arrive, and the experience you build now, including the landing pages and tracking, carries over.

The short version

Monolith's take: ChatGPT Ads are worth a small, well-tracked test for any business people research before they buy. The audience is huge and still uncrowded, but there are no benchmarks yet and the AI rewrite default arrives October 29. Fix your landing page first, make the rewrite setting a deliberate choice, and judge the test on cost per customer, not clicks.

Questions, answered
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
You set a maximum bid. OpenAI suggests starting click campaigns at $3 to $5 per click; you can also pay per thousand impressions. Costs are set in an auction, so you may pay less than your maximum.

Adults on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Ads are not shown on Plus, Pro or Business plans, or to accounts identified as under 18.
Can I turn off ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements?
Yes. They switch on by default from October 29, 2026, but you can opt out before then or change the setting at any time in Ads Manager, for the whole account or per campaign.
