Midjourney V8.2: editing images without starting over
New editing controls let you describe changes and use reference images. We explain how that could help with campaign revisions and what still needs a careful review.
By Monolith

Midjourney V8.2 launched on July 24, 2026. A public test of its image edit model followed on August 27, adding a more direct way to revise an existing image. The July release focuses on generation and personalization; the August update adds instructions, references and local edits. For a campaign, that means evaluating the revision process as well as the first image.32
Why editing matters after the first good image
Imagine you have an image the client likes, but the next placement needs a wider crop and a different background. Starting again from a written description can change the subject, lighting and composition along with the part you wanted to fix. An editing workflow begins with the existing image and a more specific request.
The opportunity is to carry an approved idea further. You might explore a seasonal setting, make space for a headline or test a different composition. Whether this saves work depends on how much of the approved image survives the edit. The useful test is the whole revision, including any repair work afterward.
What changed versus the earlier workflow
Midjourney says V8.2 improves the appearance of generated images and the way it adapts to your preferences. Personalization means using a profile of visual preferences to help guide later images. It can be useful when exploring a style, but a style you like is not automatically the right one for a client’s brand.3
Try a familiar brief with both the old and new profiles. Compare the features you care about, such as lighting, composition and how closely the image follows the request. This is more useful than deciding that the newest profile must replace the one your team already uses.
The editing update lets you describe a change and supply up to four reference images. You might show the product that needs to stay recognizable and another image for the lighting you want. References give the model more information than a short written instruction alone.2
| Detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| Inpainting | Change a selected part of an image, such as the background behind a product. |
| Outpainting | Extend the image beyond its original edges, for example to leave space for a headline. |
| Reference images | Up to four images to help guide the requested change. This approach replaces Omni Reference. |
| Existing style settings | Moodboards and style references may need clearer written instructions. Recheck familiar requests. |
Generation and editing are different tests
| Area | July V8.2 release | August V8.2 edit test |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Aesthetics and personalization | Instruction-led revision |
| Reference control | No new reference count stated in launch note | Up to four reference images |
| Local changes | Not the focus of the July announcement | Inpainting and outpainting |
| Maturity evidence | Model launch announcement | Public testing, with edge cases acknowledged |
The sources reviewed for this article did not establish a comparable independent score for V8.2 or its editing model. You can still run a useful test: use the same picture and references, ask for one change and check the rest of the image for unintended changes. Save the rejected attempts too. They show how much work the revision process actually takes.
Practical uses
Start with one approved image and ask for one meaningful change. If the background needs to change, inspect the product as well as the background afterward. A correct color or label can matter more to the client than an attractive overall result. Record how many attempts it takes to get an image that passes those checks.
For a website hero, outpainting can create room for a headline around an approved subject. For an ad family, references can guide visual continuity across compositions. Keep the headline, legal copy and final layout in an editable design file rather than baking every element into the generated image. That makes later changes easier to inspect and control.
Keep the final advertisement in an editable design file. Place the generated picture in that file, then add your headline, offer and logo as separate elements. If the offer changes next week, the designer can update the words without asking an image model to redraw the entire advertisement.
For a business owner reviewing the result, compare it with the original product photo at full size. Look at the details a customer would use to recognize or buy the product. A polished image that depicts the wrong packaging can create more work than a less ambitious image that is accurate.
Access, limits and cost
You can use the edit model through the website controls or the --edit command in Discord. Subscriptions include allowances for processing time, described as Fast GPU hours. Those hours measure use of the service’s computing resources; they do not translate into a fixed number of client-ready images.12
| Detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| Basic | $10; 3.3 Fast GPU hours. |
| Standard | $30; 15 Fast GPU hours. |
| Pro | $60; 30 Fast GPU hours. |
| Mega | $120; 60 Fast GPU hours. |
| Stealth Mode | Available on Pro and Mega. Review privacy and commercial-use terms before supplying confidential product material. |
Terms used in this article
